Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves working as a naval architect to inspect and certify dry docks at naval shipyards, ensuring they are safe for docking and repairing ships.
You'll lead audits, analyze structural issues during ship docking and undocking, and recommend fixes to maintain naval readiness.
It's a good fit for experienced engineers with a background in ship structures and safety who enjoy hands-on technical oversight in a military setting.
You will serve as a NAVAL ARCHITECT in the Dry Dock Certification Office (Code 1582), Infrastructure Revitalization and Readiness Division (Code 1580), Nava Shipyard Support Office (Code 1500) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience independently developing complete docking plans, including keel block arrangements, bilge block spacing, and load distribution analysis; Experience performing complex dry dock calculations, including block reaction analysis, hull girder loading checks, and structural stress evaluations.
Experience during docking and undocking evolutions, advising the dockmaster on trim, stability, and block alignment.
Experience conducting comprehensive underwater hull inspections, identifying structural deficiencies, and critical repairs.
Experience valuating structural integrity of hull components exposed during dry docking and recommended engineering solutions; Experience writing technical reports detailing hull condition, repair requirements, and engineering justification for structural modifications; Experience providing technical oversight to shipyards during underwater hull repairs, including welding, fairing, and structural renewals.
GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience conducting basic hull inspections after docking, identifying coating failures, minor structural defects, and wasted plating; Experience performing simple structural assessments (e.g., plate thickness checks, minor frame deformation evaluations); Experience updating as found condition reports and drafted repair recommendations for review by senior engineers; Experience assisting with undocking readiness checks, including verifying closure of sea chests, installation of blanks, and completion of underwater repairs.
