Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a naval architect focused on hydromechanics, where you'll conduct research on how ships move through water, manage lab equipment for experiments, and guide students and teams in engineering projects at the Naval Academy.

It's ideal for someone with hands-on experience in lab-based engineering and a passion for teaching and technical problem-solving in a naval research setting.

The role combines research, instruction, and facility oversight to advance ship design and ocean mechanics studies.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in federal or equivalent service
  • Proficiency in using lab instrumentation, measurement equipment, and data acquisition systems in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to provide technical oversight and direction for team research, hands-on lab exercises, and independent engineering projects
  • Skills in preparing CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and documents backed by complex technical calculations
  • Experience developing criteria and procedures for hydromechanics research, including ship resistance, propulsion, dynamics, seakeeping, ocean wave mechanics, and wave-structure interactions
  • Capability to instruct students and junior faculty on lab equipment use, procedures, safety, and support classroom activities
  • Knowledge of performing complex technical calculations, optimizing test procedures, and designing novel test equipment

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:1) Working with lab instrumentation, measurement equipment, and data acquisition in a laboratory setting, 2) Provide technical oversight and direction for team-based research, hands-on laboratory exercises, and independent engineering projects, 3) Prepare CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and documents supported by complex technical calculations to meet program objectives.

  • You will develop criteria and procedures for advanced hydromechanics research to include: investigation of ship resistance and propulsion, ship dynamics and seakeeping, ocean wave mechanics, wave-structure interactions.
  • You instruct students and junior faculty on proper use of laboratory equipment, procedures, and safety, while supporting classroom lectures and interactive laboratory exercises.
  • You will perform complex technical calculations and identify economical, efficient procedures to optimize test program objectives and design of novel test equipment.
  • You will prepare and present technical reports, recommendations, solutions, and research findings to diverse audiences across government, academia, and professional organizations.
  • You will provide consultation to Midshipmen, faculty, and external researchers on the design, evaluation, and execution of complex test setups for non-standard use of Naval Academy Hydromechanics Laboratory (NAHL) facilities.
  • You will oversee the operation, maintenance, and engineering upgrades of specialized assets, including two high-speed towing basins, recirculating water tunnels, and coastal engineering wave tanks.
