Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping farmers and local groups in Utah save water by creating plans for better irrigation, checking on water-saving projects, and teaching others about conservation programs.

It's a temporary role for up to two years in Logan, with flexible hours and a mix of office work and fieldwork.

A good fit would be someone with a background in farming or natural resources who likes building relationships and working outdoors.

Job Title: Water Optimization Technician

Location: Logan
Time-Limited position for up to 2 years.

Job Description:
The goal is to help preserve, improve, and sustain Utah agriculture for future generations. Key responsibilities include writing irrigation management plans, developing conservation plans centered on water usage, and inspecting and monitoring irrigation projects. This position offers flexible hours.

Requirements

  • Provide technical assistance to Irrigators, Irrigation Companies, Water Conservancy Districts, and Local .
  • Conservation Districts, to plan and implement water optimization projects.
  • Perform outreach and educational activities on state and federal water conservation programs.
  • Build relationships with landowners, partners, other agencies and groups to promote water optimization and conservation.
  • Inspect water optimization projects before, during and after project implementation.
  • Monitor water optimization projects.
  • Gather water optimization data and create required reports.

Qualifications

  • Full understanding and experience of the conservation planning process.
  • Working knowledge of irrigation methods and practices.
  • Working knowledge of water quality rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of water rights rules and regulations.
  • Good verbal and communication skills and the ability to build trust with producers and landowners.
  • Proficient in Excel, word, and GIS programs.
  • Background in agriculture.
*Preference may be given to local candidates with planning experience.

  • Best qualified individuals for this job will have knowledge and skills related to Agronomy, Soil Science, Botany, Horticulture, Agricultural Education, Agricultural Engineering, or other natural resource management skills and abilities.
  • Risks requiring special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, contagious diseases, hazardous chemicals, etc.; risks found in potentially dangerous/unusual situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack.
  • The work may require overnight travel.
  • Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53-3-202(1)(a) ...granted the privilege to operate a motor vehicle by being licensed as a driver by the division under this chapter.
  • Work may require some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough terrain or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities.
