Summary

This internship program with Saint Paul Regional Water Services offers hands-on experience in areas like mapping and data management for water systems, inspecting construction projects for water mains, and testing water quality in the field and lab.

Key Requirements

  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree program in engineering, geography, environmental science, or a related field
  • Proficiency with ESRI GIS software and spatial data editing for GIS Engineering roles
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and at construction sites for Water Main Inspection roles
  • Basic skills in GPS equipment operation and field data collection
  • Familiarity with water sampling, analysis, and laboratory support for Water Quality roles
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with customers, contractors, and staff
  • Availability for full-time summer work (40 hours/week) from mid-May to early September

Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) is looking to hire multiple interns to assist with the GIS Engineering team, Damage Prevention Unit, Administrative Unit, and the Water Quality team.Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) is looking to hire multiple interns to assist with the GIS Engineering team, Damage Prevention Unit, and the Water Quality team.

Here's what you can expect to do:

GIS Engineering Intern - 1 available position

Perform functions related to the operation of GIS and data applications for Saint Paul Regional Water Services.

The intern will work under direct supervision on specific projects and on general GIS and data management projects.

The majority of the time will be spent conducting updates to spatial data and performing database maintenance.

The primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Perform edits on GIS data
  • Create and/or edit point, line and polygon feature classes with ESRI software for the development and maintenance of spatial databases
  • Assist staff with routine GIS database maintenance
  • Conduct quality control and data cleanup
  • Prepare clear, complete and accurate maps for special projects
  • Perform data collection in the field using GPS technology and other means
  • Utilize MS Office technologies and the ESRI suite of software to provide requested service to others

Water Main Construction Inspection Intern - 3 available positions

These positions will require working outside at field sites and will require extensive time out of the office as dictated by the construction site location and schedule.

The primary duties are assisting with construction oversight and documentation under the guidance of Water Utility Technician staff.

The primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Operate GPS survey equipment
  • Assist with pre and post construction inspections
  • Assist with Gopher State One-Call Utility locates
  • Correspond with customers, contractors, operations staff, etc.

Water Quality Intern - 2 available positions

The Water Quality Unit is responsible for source water monitoring, water treatment processes control, distribution system water quality monitoring, responding to customer complaints, providing sampling and testing support to the distribution system during the main construction season.

The primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Basic field water sampling from source to tap and water quality analysis
  • Assist water quality staff with routine sample collection and perform field water quality analysis in the distribution system
  • Assist with general laboratory support functions
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required

Information Specific to this Position:
Anticipated start/end dates: mid-May to early September (Dates are somewhat flexible)
Hours: 40 hours a week during the summer

Requirements

GIS Engineering:
Eligible candidates must be currently attending or enrolled in a post-secondary program with two years of college semester credits including at least two class in GIS.
  • Must maintain active student status for the duration of internship.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro software and ArcGIS Online

Water Main Construction Inspection:
Eligible candidates must be currently attending or enrolled in a post-secondary program studying in the field of Civil or Environmental Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; or a related discipline.
  • Must maintain active student status for the duration of internship.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license. Able to drive a company vehicle as necessary.

Water Quality:
Eligible candidates must be currently studying microbiology, biology, chemistry, water quality, water treatment or a similar discipline or enrolled in a Water Environmental Technologies program and meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Must maintain active student status for the duration of internship.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license. Able to drive a company vehicle as necessary.
