Job Description
The Department of Water Resources is currently recruiting Engineering and Science interns to assist staff in the Stormwater Technical Services Division. This position will primarily support Dams, Watershed Improvement, and Stormwater Infrastructure groups. Water Resources can offer challenging and rewarding career paths in all levels of employment in a wide array of sciences, construction, and engineering fields. This position is a temporary career development opportunity with a possibility of future permanent employment.

Essential Duties
  • Sampling and monitoring of green stormwater infrastructure and watershed health indicators
  • Field inspection of watershed improvement project sites, detention/retention ponds, drainage issues, and stormwater BMP(s)
  • Assisting field and office personnel in stream walks, wetland walks, and site investigations
  • Minor boating in lakes near dams to exercise outlet control valves
  • Digital compilation and analysis of stormwater information using databases, programs, and dashboards (Lucity, ArcGIS, Microsoft PowerBI, NOAA, and USGS online)
  • Review of dam inspection reports for resulting action items
  • Prepare maintenance schematics for county-maintained dams using ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat DC, or Bluebeam software
  • Prepare work orders to execute maintenance actions for county-maintained dams
  • Document field inspections in written and photographic forms
  • Assist in review of floodplain model deliverables (HEC-RAS, SWMM)
  • Assisting in reporting efforts to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD)
  • Provide support in MS4 permit compliance to county personnel
  • Maintain and file departmental records and documents
  • Prepare presentations summarizing work and infrastructure status
  • Assist other engineering and science personnel as needed in the Technical Services Division

  • Part-time position, 15-29 hours per week, not-to-exceed 1,508 hours in a 12-month calendar year, with at least one year commitment
  • Cooperative Intern – 40 hours per week, not-to-exceed 1,508 hours in a 12-month calendar year, with at least 2 semester commitment

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Actively enrolled in a Trades, Associates, Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral degree program in the field of Agriculture, Agriscience, Biology, Construction, Construction Management, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Engineering, Earth Science, Forestry, General Science, Geography, Geology, Health Science, Public Health, or Technology with at least one (1) year completed
  • Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher

Physical Requirements
  • Moderate physical activity including stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, scaling, pulling and the ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Workers may occasionally be subject to outside environments with allergens, insects, and wildlife present
