Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of engineers to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear weapons systems, including reviewing reports on risks and hazards, coordinating with government agencies, and supporting testing and certification processes.

It's a supervisory role in the U.S. Navy's Strategic Systems Programs, focused on high-stakes defense work.

A good fit would be an experienced engineer with a background in nuclear safety who thrives in collaborative, policy-driven environments.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field meeting OPM professional engineering standards
  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-13 or equivalent level in nuclear weapons systems safety and surety
  • Experience performing and reviewing safety policies, standards, and technical requirements for nuclear systems
  • Knowledge of evaluating systems requirements for nuclear weapons testing and certification
  • Ability to lead teams in preparing and reviewing Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), Hazard Analyses (HAs), Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), and Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs)
  • Familiarity with Risk Management Framework (RMF), Anti-Tamper, Program Protection, and Cybersecurity planning
  • Strong coordination skills with stakeholders from DoD, DOE, and DON to ensure policy compliance

In addition to the basic education requirement, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or NH-03 pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional Engineer performing and reviewing nuclear weapons systems safety and surety policy, standards and technical requirements and evaluating systems requirements to support nuclear weapons testing and certification.

  • You will lead and develop nuclear safety and surety for implementation across system-of-system environments.
  • You will oversee preparation and review of Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), Hazard Analyses (HAs). Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs).
  • You will oversee preparation and review of Risk Management Framework (RMF), Anti-Tamper, Program Protection, and Cybersecurity plan.
  • You will coordinate with multiple stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable DoD, DOE, and DON safety policies and requirements.
  • You will support weapons certification processes and interfaces with test authorities to evaluate requirements supporting safety-critical functions and fail-safes.
