Full Job Description

You will serve as a RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER in the HEALTH PHYSICS DEPARTMENT of UNIF SRVS UNI OF THE HLTH SCI.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of professional experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: independently manage or direct a complex radiation safety program; provide expert technical advice across multiple radiation safety program areas; resolve complex radiation protection problems; develop, revise, and implement policy and guidance; oversee compliance and regulatory actions; and advise senior leadership on program risk, compliance, and operational decisions in a complex environment such as AFRRI's research reactor, irradiator, and mixed-use research program.

  • You will ensure safety in the procurement, control, storage, handling, use, and disposal of radiation sources and radioactive material in the Command's custody.
  • You will evaluate personnel radiation exposure and notifies individuals and their supervisors of exposures approaching or exceeding local and/or federal limits and recommends appropriate remedial action.
  • You will oversee and/or conduct training of personnel in the proper safety precautions to be followed when using radioactive materials and ionizing radiation devices.
  • You will report directly to AFRRI Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) director on all issues pertaining to the command’s Radioactive Materials Licenses in accordance with all Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations.
  • You will enforce compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations relative to the use of NRC regulates sources and management of the licenses.
