Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of firefighters in responding to emergencies, directing rescue and medical operations, and overseeing training at a naval base in Virginia.

It requires hands-on experience in fire suppression and emergency management, along with strong communication and leadership skills.

A good fit would be someone with prior supervisory experience in firefighting or emergency services who holds key certifications and thrives in high-pressure situations.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-07/08 level or equivalent, including directing fire suppression, rescue operations, and EMS during emergencies
  • Proficiency in delivering professional oral and written communications, including reports, briefs, and procedures
  • Experience planning and leading training classes, skills practice, and drills at the company or station level
  • Possess required certifications: HAZMAT Incident Commander, NREMT-Basic, CPR (Healthcare Provider), EVOC, Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, and Fire Instructor I (awarded by DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Knowledge of fire ground operations, incident command systems, and deployment of personnel and equipment
  • Ability to oversee fire protection operations, assign work based on priorities and employee capabilities, and ensure team proficiency

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Supervisory Firefighter in the Navy Fire and Emergency Services of NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY NORFOLK NSY.

For Outside applicants claiming VEOA (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service): Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Responding to emergency incidents and directing fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical resource, (EMS) in immediate mitigation actions; 2) delivering accurate, effective, and professional oral and written communications, internal written communications, briefs, procedures, explanatory papers, correspondence, and investigative/fire/EMS reports and; 3) planning and leading company- or station-level training classes, skills practice, and company drills.

  • You will oversee and direct all fire protection operations.
  • You will be responsible for assigning work based on priorities and difficulty of assignments and capabilities of employees.
  • You will ensures all subordinates are proficient in their expected roles relative to their position descriptions.
  • You will demonstrate a complete, thorough knowledge of fire ground operations, size up, tactics, and the correct deployment of emergency personnel and equipment.
  • You will demonstrate organizational ability to properly and completely set up and manage an incident command post and Incident Management System.
  • You will perform Basic Life Support emergency medical services and respond to all types of emergencies on all types of Navy assets to include buildings, ships, aircraft as well hazardous material, technical rescue and radiological emergencies.
