Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter at a Navy base in Hawaii, where you'll supervise a team, fight fires on ships and around the installation, provide basic emergency medical care, and conduct safety training to prevent hazards.

It's ideal for someone with hands-on firefighting experience, leadership skills, and the required certifications who thrives in high-pressure, team-based environments.

The role combines daily supervision with responding to emergencies on naval vessels and facilities.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-08 level or equivalent, including detecting fire hazards, operating firefighting equipment, providing basic life support, applying fire theory, and leading firefighter crews
  • Possess Fire Officer II certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • Possess Fire Instructor I certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • Possess Fire Inspector I certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • Possess Hazmat Incident Commander certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • Possess Airport Firefighter certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • Possess Incident Safety Officer certification (DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board)
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) at EMT level or higher

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Supervisory Firefighter for the COMMANDER NAVY REGION HAWAII.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Detecting fire hazards (potential and immediate) and determining corrective action; 2) Operating firefighting vehicles and equipment in accordance with principles of hydraulics and firefighting techniques; 3) Providing emergency medical care at the basic life support level in accordance with safety standards and regulations; 4) Applying the theory of fire propagation and progression to reduce fire hazards and/or combat fires; 5) Leading a crew of firefighters (i.e.

directing drills, assigning work, etc.) **NOTE: Your answer must be supported by information in your resume.** This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Hazmat Incident Commander, Airport Firefighter, Incident Safety Officer.

These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or Pro Board to meet the requirement. Also requires National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) EMT level certification or higher.

  • You will conduct fire protection and preventions education, and training as required.
  • You will effectively address employee suggestions, complaints, grievances, and other day-to-day administrative matters.
  • You will combat fire on board large ships (i.e., destroyers, cargo ships, submarines, aircraft carriers).
