The SC Department of Agriculture has a
SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
available within our Retail Food Safety Division for
students seeking a degree in agriculture, food safety, or a similar field.

Summer Feeding Program – Campus of the State Farmers Market in West Columbia.

Through USDA's summer meal programs, approved sites in communities across the country serve meals and snacks to kids 18 and younger at no cost.

The SC Department of Agriculture's (SCDA) Retail Food Safety program inspects these sites to ensure proper food handling practices are being adhered to.

As an intern with the Summer Feeding program, you will gain actual work experience in planning and coordinating Summer Feeding activities.

This program's goal is to provide work experience that will be beneficial to a student who is interested in a career in retail food safety.

Serving as the Summer Feeding Intern, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing assistance with responses to Retail Food Officers, the Department of Education, and Summer Feeding sponsors.
  • Maintaining communication lines with the Department of Education on approvals and inspections of summer feeding sites and sponsors.
  • Assisting Retail Food Safety staff with actions to ensure that non-complying sites return to compliance with state regulations.
  • Providing assistance in directing responses to field staff regarding summer feeding site locations and sponsor approval issues.
  • Conducting summer feeding site inspections in the Midlands area.
  • Assisting with programmatic guideline revisions, link updates and communications to area staff on summary of changes.
  • Assisting in technical support for the Retail Food Safety program meetings and training.

NOTE: This internship is based on the campus of the Columbia State Farmers Market in West Columbia, SC. This is not a remote internship. However, there is a potential for additional hours from August 7th to September 1st.
