The SC Department of Agriculture has a
SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
available within our Agricultural Outreach Department for students
seeking a degree in agriculture, marketing or a similar field.
Agricultural Commodities - Statehouse grounds in downtown Columbia.
As an Agricultural Commodities Intern, you will work directly with the Director of Agricultural Outreach at the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA). As an SCDA Commodities intern you will work closely with the commodity marketing directors to attend regional and statewide promotional and research events funded by commodity boards and their respective associations. With the commodity programs you will assist in SC Watermelon Promotion opportunities across the state, attend Clemson Extension Events and other events as assigned. With the Director of Agricultural Outreach, you will be involved in understanding the Drought response and Drought management planning for the state of South Carolina as well.
Assisting with record/database maintenance; mailings; and other administrative tasks related to the marketing of the assigned programs and events.
Some weekend work and travel is required due to the nature of the programs, therefore reliable transportation is required.
If you are not able to ride with an agency employee, mileage will be reimbursed at the approved state mileage rate.
Requirements
Must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior or attending graduate school for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Publisher, MS Power Point and Outlook email and Outlook calendar.
- Strong writing, proofreading and editing skills.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to stand for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds and work in unconditioned spaces and outdoors.
Additional Information
- Housing is the responsibility of selected candidate, and no stipend is provided.
- Surface level parking in a state lot is available on a first-come, first-serve basis each day. Metered parking will be the responsibility of selected candidate if unable to secure a surface level spot in a state lot.
