Full Job Description
Enforces state and federal laws governing commercial motor vehicles. Protects the motoring public by preventing accidents, removing unsafe drivers and vehicles from South Carolina highways. Protect South Carolina's environment from unsafe hazardous materials transportation practices. Prevents the premature deterioration of our bridges through size and weight enforcement.
1) Patrols streets/ highways enforcing all motor vehicle laws with primary focus on commercial motor vehicles.
a. Must have the ability to recognize violations of SC Vehicle and other Criminal Laws.
b. Must be able to accurately cite violators, prepare cases, and prosecute violators in court.
2) Conducts roadside Driver/Vehicle inspections on commercial motor vehicles using the North American Standard (NAS) Inspection Procedures.
a. Must have a good working knowledge of state law/federal rules & regulations.
b. Must be able to independently conduct all levels of inspections.
3) Operates portable scales and permanent scale facilities.
a. Must be able to independently weigh trucks using portable scales.
b. Must be able to independently operate permanent scale facilities.
4) Able to work with minimum supervision. Assumes command in the absence of the corporal. Trains and assists new personnel. Performs other duties as directed.

c. Must be able to teach new officers all aspects of their job.
d. Must follow work related orders from supervisors.
e. Must be able to assume and complete additional tasks assigned.
5) Submits reports to supervisors.
a. Ability to accurately submit daily, weekly and monthly reports as directed by supervisors.
6) Attends continuous in-service training for re-certifications and attends any additional training.
a. Must complete all training to stay certified as a SC Law Enforcement Officer.
b. Completes all other training as deemed necessary by the SC State Transport Police.
Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS -
A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
AGENCY MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS -
Employee must have attained permanent status in the rank of STP Master Officer. Employee must have a high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience. Employee must be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a law enforcement officer. Employee must have the ability to communicate effectively with the public, co-workers, and supervisor.
Employee is under general supervision, maintains daily contact with supervisor and must function with independence, judgement and discretion to enforce S.C. Motor Vehicle Laws as well as commercial motor vehicle size, weight, and safety regulations/laws.
Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time in all types of weather and have the capability to lift and carry approximately 100 lbs. Employee is required to work various shifts including weekends and/or holidays. On occasion, this position will require travel outside the normal work location. Some travel will require overnight stay.
