Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas invites applicants for Skilled Trades Helper. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled duties involved in the maintenance and construction of city buildings, grounds, parks and other facilities; and performs specialized projects as required.

Supervision Received
Receives general supervision from a supervisor. Depending on assignment, may receive lead supervision from a skilled trades employee or a crew leader.

Examination Process

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas.

The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.

The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.


Applicants who are selected for the written test will be notified by email AFTER the application closing date.

Eligible List
You must score 70% or higher on the written examination to be placed on the eligible list.

Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include a hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.

Requirements

Essential Functions:
  1. Participates in maintaining city buildings, grounds, parks and other facilities.
  2. Assists with the construction and refurbishing of various structures.
  3. Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including motorized vehicles.
  4. Installs roofing, insulation and drywall.
  5. When Assigned to Streets & Sanitation Division
  6. Assists with block masonry construction.
  7. Prepares ground and sets forms for concrete; pours and finishes concrete.
  8. Assists with welding fabrication and installation projects.
  9. Participates in semi-skilled painting projects.
When Assigned to the Parks & Grounds Maintenance Division
  1. Installs, maintains and repairs chain link and wrought iron fencing, park benches, tables, playground equipment, all types of shade structures and protective shelters, and other furnishings in city parks.
  2. Assists with inspection of park amenities and the repair or removal of those that present a safety hazard.
  3. Assists in the general maintenance and cleaning of parks, semi-skilled painting projects, and welding fabrication and installation projects.
  4. Prepares ground and sets forms for concrete; assists in pouring and finishing concrete.
  5. Assists with the maintenance and repair of park rest rooms and other structures.
  6. Participates in park construction and rehabilitation projects.
When Assigned to Facilities Management Division
  1. Installs, maintains, adjusts and makes minor repairs to building hardware, windows, sashes, doors, trim work, electrical fixtures, lamps, switches, sinks, commodes, water heaters, swamp coolers, air conditioning systems, flooring, walls, roofs, painted surfaces and other building components.
  2. Assists in relocating building equipment.
  3. Maintains daily logs and completes required documentation and records.
  4. Assists in the construction or remodel of buildings.

When Assigned to Transportation Engineering Division

  1. Under supervision of a Licensed Journeyman Electrician: assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal, pedestrian flasher and school flasher systems and related devices.
  2. Under supervision of a Licensed Journeyman Electrician: assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting and area lighting infrastructure.
  3. Assist with the installation of underground conduit and wiring for traffic signal and street light infrastructure.
  4. Operates a variety of small power tools, hand tools, and related equipment.
  5. Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files. Documents work and tests conducted on traffic signal systems, roadway lighting, area lighting, and sports lighting systems, and related electronic and electrical systems and devices.
  6. Assists with the maintenance and review of shop inventory.
  7. Supports Traffic System Technicians on other jobs and duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions:
  1. Performs general cleanup of job sites.
  2. Performs special projects as assigned.
  3. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience:
One year of general maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing or air-conditioning experience.
Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Additional specialized training in one of the skilled trades is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.
