This entry-level job involves helping experienced riggers at a naval shipyard by preparing heavy items for safe lifting and moving, gathering necessary tools, and assisting with positioning large equipment like ship parts.
It's a hands-on role focused on following instructions to avoid damage or injury in a busy ship repair environment.
A good fit would be someone reliable with basic mechanical skills, eager to learn on the job, and comfortable working as part of a team in a physical labor setting.
You will serve as a RIGGER HELPER in the RIGGING AND EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Utilize a wide range of rigging equipment and material and understand directions given by the journeyman.
Guide material through the hatch or openings in the hull.
Direct the crane operator in lifting or lowering items using various signs Perform rigging practices as instructed to prevent damage to the items being handled, injury to self, and other personnel.
Identify rigging gear such as shackles, beam clamps, periscope clamps, etc. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and job orders.
