Full Job Description

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Alcohol &Tax Compliance Division is seeking a Revenue Auditor 3 to join the Corporate Tax team.

The Compliance Division oversees all facets of tax processing, issuances of business permits, and alcohol regulation throughout the state.

From the receipt of individual and business tax returns and payments, audits and collections, to routine compliance inspections and regulatory verification of alcohol-licensed establishments, this division is tasked with upholding, enforcing and educating taxpayers and licensees on Iowa’s laws and regulations.


In this position you will:

  • Review audits completed by lower-level auditors to ensure accuracy of and proper interpretation of laws, rules, and/or procedures.
  • Resolve tax questions asked by auditors or taxpayers and provide coaching and counseling to lower-level auditors. Communicate observed training needs to auditor supervisors
  • In conjunction with other Tax Gap auditors, establish and review measurements to monitor processes
  • Conducts complex business income or RAC tax audits by independently performing audit investigations to ensure businesses are correctly reporting and computing Iowa tax liability
  • Contact taxpayers or representatives by letter, by phone or in-person to communicate findings
  • Assist in developing selective audit criteria


Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • 2+ years experience with client-facing communication, resolving complaints, disputes or escalations
  • Experience performing or reviewing audits and following audit procedures
  • Experience training processes and procedures, answering questions and mentoring peers

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1.) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting or finance, and experience equal to two and a half years of full-time work in professional accounting or financial auditing.

2) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of nine semester hours in accounting, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in professional accounting or financial auditing.

3) Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate, graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in professional accounting or financial auditing.

4) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in accounting, taxation, business administration, or a related field, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in professional accounting or financial auditing.

5) Number 1 or 2 above, where each year of full-time work experience in public or private sector accounting, auditing, budgeting, assessment, computation, or collection of taxes, or closely-related financial functions may substitute for thirty semester hours of the required education.

6) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time work as a Revenue Auditor 2.
