Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a nuclear engineer on a U.S.

Navy base in Japan, where you'll guide teams on planning and executing ship repairs, especially in sensitive nuclear areas, while ensuring safety and following strict rules.

It's ideal for someone with engineering experience in nuclear systems who enjoys leading projects and solving technical problems in a high-stakes military environment.

Note that medical and dental care is very limited in Japan, so it's best for those prepared for overseas living.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering or related field meeting OPM basic education requirements
  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-11 level or equivalent in nuclear engineering, including technical guidance and project coordination
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA policies, Nuclear Power Manual (NPM), and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant (NNPP) systems
  • Experience reviewing Technical Work Documents (TWDs) for compliance in nuclear and non-nuclear work
  • Skills in resolving reactor plant and propulsion system repair issues using engineering principles
  • Ability to evaluate and delegate workload for space control teams to ensure radiation safety and system integrity
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain necessary security clearance for sensitive nuclear work

Full Job Description

You will serve as a NUCLEAR ENGINEER in the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department of PSNS and IMF on the Space Control Team of PSNS and IMF.

Please see Additional Information section below.*** In addition to the Basic Education Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, and leading project coordination efforts in support of space control, scheduling, and work execution during shipboard alterations and assures that concerns from work in nuclear spaces are included in the technical planning associated with access restrictions and work execution.

  • You will provide review of Technical Work Documents (TWDs) submitted by the nuclear and non-nuclear engineers ahead of work execution for compliance with NAVSEA and shipyard Nuclear Power Manual (NPM) policies
  • You will provide resolution of problems concerning the repair of major components of the reactor plant and propulsion plant system.
  • You will evaluate and resolved deficiencies of the space control program using engineering standards and principles.
  • You will evaluate workload and priority in order to delegate work for execution by space control team members.
  • You will provide direction to all organizations involved in space control to ensure the protection from radiation exposure, maintain the safety and integrity of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant (NNPP) systems.
