Job Description

Summary

This job involves handling military pay for service members, including researching and fixing errors in their accounts, processing payments or debt collections, and reviewing accounts for those leaving the military.

It also includes responding to high-level inquiries from Congress or the White House after thorough investigation.

A good fit would be someone with experience in financial processing or payroll who is detail-oriented and comfortable using computer systems to solve problems.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-4 level for GS-5 (e.g., reviewing and inputting financial/accounting data using standardized procedures)
  • One year of specialized experience at GS-5 level for GS-6 (e.g., using automated payroll systems to process pay actions, research corrections, and resolve diverse pay issues)
  • Time-in-grade requirement: 52 weeks at GS-4 or higher for GS-5, or GS-5 or higher for GS-6, met within 30 days of announcement closing
  • Ability to perform in-depth research to identify and resolve discrepancies in military pay accounts

Specialized experience is defined as: performing duties that support the processing of financial/accounting transactions using standardized procedures that may include reviewing financial/accounting systems information/documents for accuracy/completeness, inputting financial/accounting information into automated systems, or correcting invalid financial/accounting transactions.

GS 6 One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-5) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized experience is defined as: using automated payroll systems to process pay actions, researching and making necessary corrections to resolve problem pay actions, and experience processing a wide variety of pay actions which require carrying out different and unrelated steps and procedures to resolve pay problems of different specialties.

Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement.

To be considered for the GS-5, applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-4 or higher in the Federal service.

To be considered for the GS-6, applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-5 or higher in the Federal service.

** The effective date of your SF-50 must reflect that you will meet the 52-week time in grade requirement within 30 days of the announcement closing.

** You may qualify for consideration if meeting time-in grade, specialized experience, education requirement, 90 days after competitive appointment requirement, and all other qualification requirements within 30 calendar days after the closing date of the announcement, unless otherwise indicated on the announcement.

This announcement will be used to fill positions with an entry grade of GS-5, or GS-6 with a target grade of GS-6. The minimum salary for grade GS-5 is $41,115, the maximum salary is $ 55,296.

The minimum salary for grade GS-6 is $45,832, the maximum salary is $61,638. Major Duties:

  • Processes complicated pay cases which requires in-depth research to determine the cause of discrepancies made in the service members account.
  • Processes debt collection or payment action based on the review.
  • Assisting with responses to inquiries such as Congressionals, White House inquiries, etc., which require extensive research in order to formulate a response.
  • Performs comprehensive review of master military pay account for separating active and/or reserve members.
