Summary

This job involves managing medical records at a military hospital in Texas, including organizing files, preparing summaries of patient reports, and helping people get the medical information they need.

No advanced medical knowledge is required, just reliability and good typing speed.

  • Ability to compose correspondence and prepare abstracts from medical reports, focusing on key information
  • Skills in reviewing clinical and outpatient records for content appropriateness and deciding on copying or abstracting
  • Experience counseling individuals on medical information requests and processing them through channels
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass background checks for Department of Defense position

About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center San Antonio, Texas. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes maintaining and researching the medical record archive system, compiling reports for the department, and assisting with medical records for patients.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. AND Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Major Duties:

  • Composes correspondence or prepares abstracts of medical reports which involve analysis of the case involved in order to present only necessary and pertinent information.
  • Reviews clinical and outpatient records, which are to be copied for appropriateness of content and determines whether record should be copied or an abstract prepared.
  • Counsels military sponsors and/or dependents requesting medical information for processing a request and processes through appropriate channels.
  • Submits copies to Medical Service Accounts Office for insurance processing and maintains a file copy.
  • Receives personal and telephone inquiries regarding the status of abstracts, medical reports, and other information requested.
