Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a military hospital's blood donor center, where you'll screen donors, collect blood safely, test it for compatibility and safety, and process it for use in transfusions.

It's a hands-on role in a fast-paced medical lab setting on an Air Force base in Texas.

A good fit would be someone with lab experience or education in medical sciences who is detail-oriented, comfortable with patient interaction, and certified in lab technology.

About the Position: This position is located at the 59th Medical Wing - Joint Base San Antonio - Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center; Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes screening patients prior to blood donation, monitoring patient vitals during collection, and processing blood specimens for laboratory testing.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages.

AND Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS).

(Copy of certification must be submitted with application package.) Major Duties:

  • Independently conduct standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking within the Donor Center.
  • Test red blood cells for ABO blood group and subgroup, RH type, and other typing tests as required.
  • Perform specialized procedures in blood banking procedures such as antibody identification and critical serological testing, to limit disease transmission to recipients.
  • Perform private interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors, ensuring donors meet all Food and Drug Administration criteria and current Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Monitor donor during donation process and observes for possible donor adverse reaction (i.e. light headache, passing out, convulsing, etc.).
  • Receive and review test results ensuring that proper procedures are followed if irregularities or tests discrepancies are found.
  • Enter results into the computer system to update the files of blood donors and follow up log for serological testing of blood donor units.
  • Process and manufacture donor units in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practices.
