Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of medical support assistants in a busy army hospital, handling tasks like scheduling patient appointments, verifying patient information, and managing administrative duties to keep things running smoothly.

About the Position: This position is located with the Department of Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, TX. A recruitment incentive may be authorized.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting clinical staff with administrative/clerical duties; scheduling patient appointments; and utilizing medical databases.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as [insert applicable field(s) of study].

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Major Duties:

  • Determine and verify patient eligibility and demographic information.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinate Medical Support Assistants located in various separate department pods.
  • Approve leave for a few hours or for emergencies.
  • Send and receive faxes on patients to and from other clinics and facilities to assist in further care of patients or for follow up appointments.
  • Register all new patients that are not already in the system to include civilian emergencies.
