Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of engineers at a naval research facility to study how underwater sounds from ships and submarines could make them easier to detect by enemies, and then suggesting ways to reduce those risks.

It requires overseeing technical projects, mentoring staff, and working with military and industry leaders to improve naval vessel safety.

A good fit would be an experienced engineer with a strong background in acoustics and leadership skills, passionate about national defense and team management.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to ND-4 (GS-12/13) in underwater acoustics and susceptibility
  • Expertise in acoustic signature modeling, measurement, and validation of technical studies
  • Proven leadership and supervision of engineering teams, including mentorship
  • Experience directing assessments of ship susceptibility to detection and recommending mitigation tactics
  • Ability to collaborate with senior stakeholders in NAVSEA, the Fleet, and industry
  • Background in relevant engineering fields such as mechanical, electrical, or naval architecture (per OPM standards)
  • Support for Fleet and NAVSEA program offices on acoustic evaluations

Full Job Description

  • You will lead a branch which assesses the susceptibility of ships to detection and prosecution based upon available signatures information and recommends operational tactics to mitigate that risk.
  • You will report acoustic susceptibility results derived from the onboard and off-hull measurements from full-scale and model acoustic evaluations.
  • You will provide Fleet and NAVSEA program offices direct support for acoustic signature and susceptibility evaluations of navy vessels.
  • You will assist in developing, attaining and supporting Division goals and initiatives by providing creative solutions to Division problems and substantive responses and input in development of NSWC initiatives and objectives.
