The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is looking for a skilled, energetic trades person to provide grounds keeping as well as building maintenance, repair, and custodial services at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth's busiest and most high-profile museum.

Located in Strasburg, PA, the museum is a large complex that preserves and interprets Pennsylvania's rich railroading history for over 100,000 visitors each year, using a world-class collection of more than 100 locomotives and railroad cars, as well as a collection of more than half a million photographic images and documents and nearly 20,000 smaller artifacts.

Requirements

As a steward of the Commonwealth's rich railroading history, you will be called upon to exercise your carpentry, construction, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and grounds keeping skills on a daily basis.

This includes ensuring that the site is clean, presentable, and ready to be enjoyed by the tens of thousands of guests who visit each year.

You will support site operations by assisting with repair services on building systems and equipment, performing grounds keeping duties, assisting with set-up and tear-down for special programs and events, and responding to after-hours alarms.


This position also offers the opportunity to assist with the preservation of historic locomotives, railcars, and related equipment and to learn or expand your knowledge of various building systems and their monitoring.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch. Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work for special events and operational needs will be required. This position responds to after-hours alarms.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a current driver's license which is not under suspension.


Additional Requirements:

  • You must have two or more years of experience which has involved at least two of the following:
    • Operation and maintenance of equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
    • Operation and maintenance of vehicles including trucks, utility vehicles, lawn mowers, and snow removal equipment.
    • Completing routine building repairs involving but not limited to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC systems.
    • Performing groundskeeping work and snow removal.
    • Identifying maintenance issues and solving problems.
    • Performing skilled and heavy manual labor indoors and outdoors.
    • Communicating effectively both orally, electronically, and in writing.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
