Full Job Description

The City of Eugene has an opening for a Hult Stage Lead Electrician for Silva and Soreng Productions at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts. Stage Lead Electricians provide regular ongoing maintenance of theatrical lighting equipment and record/log keeping and maintain current knowledge of lighting systems and upgrades for modern technical theater procedures. The Stage Lead Electrician will also operate lighting consoles for shows and be skilled in specialty positions of electrics along with basic stagehand grip tasks for all departments of carpentry, audio, and video. This position is represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

The City of Eugene determines starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA).

Must reside in the State of Oregon and be able to report onsite for work as needed to meet business needs.
Schedule: Part-time position. Hours are variable up to 40 / week with some overtime required. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including extended evenings and weekends.

Requirements

All employees are assigned to the Stagehand class and are expected to perform Grip duties. Other job assignments may be made based on production needs.

Grips perform varied stage work including by not limited to loading in/out, maintenance, lighting, rigging, props, video projection, and other stage-related work.


  • Operates lighting console and networked electrical systems for performances.

  • Designs and maintains lighting rep plot.

  • Interpret and build a theatrical user's lighting plot. Contributes to the theatre’s overall operations, safety, maintenance, and customer service.

  • Adheres to safety rules and procedures in all aspects of operations.

  • Maintains lighting and electrical equipment storage areas and keeps stage areas clean.

  • Maintains effective communication and cooperative working relationships with crew members, road show staff, and management representatives.

  • Actively support and respect diversity in the workplace.

  • Supports various departments performing work related to fabrication, maintenance, repair, placement, handling, setting, striking, dismantling, props, carpentry, electrical and fly systems.

  • Unloads and loads production trucks and arranges equipment preparatory to performances following work order specifications.

  • Depending on assignment, functions as ongoing lead worker over lower-level classifications, road crew staff and temporary employees.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience

Two years of increasingly responsible related experience in stage trades, including one-year full time experience in area of assignment. Work experience in a professional performing arts venue comparable to the Hult Center required.


Education
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Background
Must pass a background check.


License
Valid Oregon driver’s license (or, the ability to obtain by date of hire); must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

Preferred Licenses and Certification:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a journey level stage electrician.
  • CPR Certification.

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must be computer literate, and able to work in both Mac and PC platforms.
  • Should have a good working knowledge of networked theatrical lighting patching, routing, and general configuration.
  • Preferable stage electrical and lighting knowledge. Certifications welcome.
  • Must be able to operate with competency on a range of 100Amp to 400 Amp company switches, and multiple ETC systems.
  • Should have a good working knowledge of theatrical lighting looks and the instruments needed to make those looks and use for some design in a rep theatre.
  • Must have an ability to work competently and reinforce artists in any genera (ballet, rock, pop, country, classical, choral, musical theater, big band, etc.).
  • Must understand principles and interpretation of lighting plots and can build a lighting design based on a client’s printed lighting plot.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of ETC Net 2 and Net 3 systems as well as ION and Apex 3 consoles, Source 4s, D60s, PARs Ellipsoidals, Elation moving lights, Lycian 3K follow spots.
  • Must have basic electronic maintenance skills including soldering and use of a multi-meter.
  • Should be able to work with clients that are new to theatre and may need lighting design ideas for their production.
  • Must be able to work independently and efficiently for small productions and be able to delegate tasks to multiple electric grips on bigger productions.

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • General knowledge and experience in the operation and proper handling of all components of theatrical and entertainment related carpentry, tools, equipment, supplies, and systems, as appropriate to assignment.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety hazards and precautions, safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of stage materials and equipment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment related to theater operations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and function as a team member to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to perform a variety of functions that require sustained, strenuous physical exertion including activities such as moving, controlling, and depending on assignment requires lifting and controlling heavy items up to 100 pounds, stacking, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, climbing, and standing on concrete for extended periods during load ins, load outs, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to work in dark conditions during performances and rehearsals, and to work in noisy environments for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to coordinate, lead, and advise the work of Electrical Grips.
  • Ability to use sound independent judgment and diplomacy.
  • Ability to coach, teach, and advise others, be a creative problem solver, and function as a general and technical resource person.

Additional Information

WORKING CONDITIONS
Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Regularly lift, control, or move objects up to 65 pounds, depending on assignment, may require lifting and controlling up 100 pounds. Required to handle or work around potentially hazardous substances. Majority of work occurs in theatre environment with significant amount of varied equipment. May walk and work at height above the theatre stage.
