Job Description

Summary

This job involves working outdoors to survey and document ancient sites, historical artifacts, and fossils on public lands managed by the government.

You'll assist experts in fieldwork like hiking through rough terrain to find and record cultural resources, and help prepare reports for preservation.

It's a great fit for someone with a background in archaeology or related studies who enjoys hands-on outdoor work and has some experience or education in cultural resource management.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 (for GS-5), such as assisting in field studies to identify cultural or historical resources
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree with related coursework in archaeology or cultural resources (or equivalent combination for GS-5)
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 (for GS-6), including planning field studies, writing reports, and applying data analysis methods
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-6 (for GS-7), such as researching cultural sites, conducting inventories, using GPS, and preparing reports for historic preservation
  • Ability to perform physical fieldwork in rough, mountainous terrain, including hiking, lifting equipment, and enduring adverse weather
  • Graduate education directly related to the position (one year for GS-6 or GS-7) or combination of experience and education to meet qualifications

No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level.

Examples of specialized experience may include assisting professional archeologist in performing actual field studies; and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources for planning systems regarding cultural resources.

-OR- Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with related course work. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level.

Examples of specialized experience may include working with a professional archeologist, planning and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and writing reports based on findings; and applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances.

-OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-7: One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level.

Examples of specialized experience may include researching reference materials such as site maps, existing archeological inventory information, books and other written data for possible cultural sites within an area of a proposed Federal undertaking; designing and conducting cultural resources inventories; navigating and recording site and survey information using a GPS; preparing or assisting with preparation of cultural resource inventory reports and maps for submission to the state historic preservation office; and preparing or assisting with preparation of forms for determination of eligibility and/or nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places.

-OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking/hiking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated that may also be steep, wet and muddy.

Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to perform the work of the position, this includes tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods away from a vehicle.

Work while in the office is performed in adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area.

Fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Major Duties:

  • Archeological Technicians assist other professional cultural resource specialists with on-the-ground field studies to identify cultural, historical, and/or paleontological resources.
  • Work may involve designing and conducting inventories, and/or compiling and interpreting collected data. As well as compiling and interpreting collected data and researching reference materials.
  • Archeological Technicians may also research reference materials, write reports on inventory activities, or prepare documents for determinations of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Research files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural inventories. Reviews reference material to aid in identification of artifacts recovered during inventories.
  • Plans and carries out non-complex cultural resource field inventories. Determines inventory methods to use, identifies area to be inventoried, schedules inventory, and arranges for equipment, supplies and transportation.
