An Automotive Equipment Operator I operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, which may include 12-yard dump trucks with trailer attachments, compressor trucks, flusher trucks, boom trucks, tower or platform trucks, crane trucks, brush-cutting tractors with flail mowers, and small front-end loaders.

Some positions may also require Tanker, HazMat, and/or Combination endorsements or certifications.

What you'll get to do:

  • Drive and operate a variety of automotive motorized vehicles and related equipment which may include 12-yard dump trucks with trailers, compressor trucks, flusher trucks, boom trucks, tower or platform trucks, crane trucks, brush cutting tractors with flail mowers, and small front-end loaders in a city environment.
  • Perform ground activities such as work zone traffic control, loading, unloading, digging, grading, bunching, blowing and other assigned manual labor.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and power hand tools including flushers, brush cutters, mowers, blowers, sandblasting and pressure washing, jack hammer, chipper, and chainsaw and duties assigned.
  • Collaborate with the crew and always represent the City of Portland to the public in a professional manner.

Requirements

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Possess a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License and medical card at time of application. (Please upload a copy)
  2. Experience safely operating a Class A vehicle within a high-density urban city environment.
  3. Experience safely performing field work such as driving 12-yard dump trucks, pulling trailers, work zone traffic control, loading and unloading equipment, digging, grading, vegetation management equipment, power tools, chainsaws and/or other manual labor.
  4. Experience receiving and following oral and/or written instructions and communicating clearly with coworkers.
  5. Knowledge and/or experience safely securing a piece of equipment or a load.

Applicants must also:

  • Possess an acceptable driving record and submit a "complete" five-year court-certified Driver's Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant's expense) upon offer.
  • Positions may require additional endorsements
    • Positions in PBOT may require a Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to pass a Prehire Evaluation that may require a medical exam, screenings and physical capacities test (PCT), after an offer of employment has been made and accepted.
  • Take and pass a Pre-employment DOT drug test upon offer

Qualifications

This recruitment will consist of an evaluation of each applicant's answers to the supplemental questions, work history, education and certificates/license information as demonstrated in their application.

    STEP 3: Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 2: Work Skills Demonstration

    • Applicants who successfully pass step 2: Pass/Fail Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase I of the recruitment process will be scheduled to participate in the work skills demonstration, weighted 100%. The work skills demonstration test will cover the following:
    1. Pre-Trip Exercise
    2. Driving Exercise
    3. Backing Exercise
    4. Coupling and Tie Down Exercise
    5. Ground Activities
    • An invitation will be sent via email. Out-of-town candidates will be required to travel to participate in phase 2.
    • Phase 2 is tentatively scheduled for the Week of March 16th
    • A photo ID and valid Class A – CDL driver’s license will be required for admittance to the test.
    • All Safety protocols must be followed.
    • You have 14 days from the notice of the minimum qualification evaluation phase II results to let us know if you would like to review and discuss your evaluation result. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information.
    • Additional evaluation may be required before establishing the eligible list and final selection.

    STEP 4: Establishment of Eligible List: Week of April 6, 2026

    • Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list.

    STEP 5: Selection (Interview): Mid to Late April 2026

    • The hiring bureau will review and select candidates to interview.

    STEP 6: Offer of Employment: May 2026

    Step 7: Pre-Employment Exam – Preplacement Physical Examination: May 2026

    As part of the conditional job offer, candidates must complete a Prehire Evaluation during the hiring process/probationary period.

    The Prehire Evaluation may consist of a medical exam, screenings, and a physical capacities test (PCT) required for work clearance and safety compliance.

    The PCT measures physical ability through job-related tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing, shoveling, and repetitive movements.

    Unless they are already employed in a City position requiring a similar or more demanding PCT, candidates must pass all required tasks to proceed with employment.
