Full Job Description

Serves as crew leader coordinating various construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads and bridges within a county ensuring that all work performed is recorded in the maintenance data management system. Assists Crew Foreman, as needed, and performs skilled manual labor and operates medium or heavy-duty equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates equipment such as aggregate spreader, belt loader, distributor truck, front -end loader, fuel service truck, injection patcher, large roller (> 4 tons), pipe washer, skid steer loader, tandem dump truck, backhoe, boom truck, excavator, lowboy tractor, motor grader, ditcher, vacuum/pipe truck in performing highway and bridge maintenance activities. Assists in devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, keeps accurate records in the Highway Maintenance Management System, maintenance requests and complaints forms. Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists of work and to control traffic. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Maintains a record of items needed by each crew and supplies them in a timely manner in order for the crews to perform their duties in a safe, efficient and timely manner. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
