Within our Audit division's Account Research and Desk Examination (ARDE) unit, we are excited to announce an opportunity for an Excise Tax Examiner 2 (in-training).

Requirements
As an Excise Tax Examiner 2 (ETE2) in the Audit division and a member of the Account Research and Desk Examination (ARDE) Unit, you will perform and resolve a full range of financial examinations. Your verification of business accounts, tax returns, audit reports and other activity records will be used to validate correct tax liability. You will also support the taxpayer or their representative regarding proper reporting and compliance with tax laws and policies.
Here are some other responsibilities:- Work with unregistered businesses who voluntarily register to pay prior tax obligations.
- Assess the tax reporting responsibility of unregistered business leads.
- Perform pre-audit planning activities.
- Provide technical support to department staff.
- Monitor mission critical tax reporting systems to ensure account integrity and data accuracy.
- Continually monitor the department's tax accounting systems for weaknesses and effectiveness.
- Assist field audit personnel in research activities.
Qualifications
Depending on experience level, the successful candidate may be hired as an Excise Tax Examiner 2 In-training, or as an Excise Tax Examiner 2.
The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education. To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:
Information Technology Proficiency:
- Spreadsheet skills to use basic formulas, tables, filtering, and sorting.
- Document skills to compose messages. Using bolding, white space, bullets, and other formatting to ensure the message is clear.
- Ability to locate files and keep your electronic files organized.
- Managing and responding to emails in a timely manner.
Research, Analysis, and Problem Solving:
- Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to reach a conclusion.
- Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected.
- Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting.
Planning and Organization:
- Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion.
- Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, time, method, etc. to meet deadlines.
Communication (Written and verbal):
- Ability to convey complex information in layman’s terms to generate understanding and reach agreement.
- Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner.
- Experience communicating effectively and professionally, in both verbal and written form.
- Experience composing written communication that effectively conveys ideas or information to the intended reader.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Working well individually and in groups.
- Effectively able to translate complex, technical concepts into understandable instructions.
- Utilizing negotiation and persuasion skills to de-escalate and obtain buy-in.
Decision making and applying independent judgment:
- Making independent decisions based on the training received.
- Applying judgement to determine the most accurate action when multiple potential actions could be taken.
- Showcasing comfort in work environments when decisions are treated on a case-by-case basis.
Adaptability:
- Possess an openness toward changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes.
- Experience working with a high degree of autonomy and also participating collaboratively as part of a team.
Preference may be granted to any candidate with a combination of professional experience or education, such as:
- Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies.
- Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of college-level accounting.
