Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as an engineering technician in the Navy's welding division, where you'll test and develop procedures for welding on ships and submarines to ensure strong and safe repairs.

It's part of a special program that helps current Navy employees with potential grow into the role through training, even if they don't fully qualify yet.

Key Requirements

  • Current permanent Department of Navy employee under competitive, time-limited, or excepted appointment eligible for noncompetitive conversion

Full Job Description

You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the Non-Nuclear Welding Branch, Code 138.2, Welding and NDT Division, Code 138, Quality Assurance Office, Code 130 of PSNS and IMF.

The entry level for this position is GS-09 with a full performance level of GS-12.

Knowledge of employees selected may vary and will require the development of an individually tailored training plan to assist them in qualifying for the full performance level of this position.

Eligibility requires that the employee be performing satisfactorily, complete all training requirements, acquire the requisite qualifications and have met time-in-grade eligibility for career ladder promotions.

This recruitment is open to applicants with GS-09 (or higher) equivalent experience demonstrating applying technical engineering procedures and methods of the welding processes and procedures used in the fabrication and repair of structural components in support of ships or submarines.

  • You will conduct studies and tests to establish procedure specifications for welding and its allied processes used in the fabrication and repair of hull and structural components and piping components for nonnuclear or nuclear applications.
  • You will provide consultant services on production problems, facilities and equipment requirements.
  • You will conduct tests on new welding materials, equipment, and processes to determine whether they are suitable for production welding and meet specification requirements.
  • You will Interpret NAVSEA technical manuals and conducts experimental testing and development projects to establish standards for insuring quality in the metal joining process.
