Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, conducting interviews, and making decisions about their housing, work, and programs in a prison setting.

It also includes counseling inmates on their adjustment and responding to questions from officials.

A good fit would be someone with experience in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working with a large group of people in a structured environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody, employment, and programs
  • Skills in coordinating and implementing a classification system for about 250 inmates
  • Conduct periodic reviews and interviews to track inmate progress
  • Provide counseling on institutional adjustment and related issues
  • Respond to inquiries from departmental officials and agencies via oral or written means
  • Proficiency in using computers to access inmate histories (social, criminal, educational, family)
  • Must complete four weeks of SCDC basic training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, employment and treatment programs.
  • Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews and evaluate inmate's progress.
  • Interview inmates, discusses and records progress made on a periodic basis.
  • Counsels with inmates relating to their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
  • Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries or information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the computer to ascertain information pertaining to inmates' social, criminal, educational and family histories.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC basic training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree;

OR

  • An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
