Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, interviewing prisoners, and managing their assignments, progress, and counseling needs in a correctional facility to ensure fair treatment and program placements.

A good fit would be someone with experience in administrative or correctional work who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working with a large caseload in a prison setting.

It requires completing basic training and handling sensitive information about inmates' backgrounds.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree with 1 year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma with 2 years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody, employment, and programs
  • Skills in interviewing inmates, counseling on adjustment issues, and conducting periodic progress reviews
  • Proficiency in operating SCDC computer systems to access inmate histories (social, criminal, educational, family)
  • Experience coordinating classification systems for a caseload of about 250 inmates
  • Must successfully complete 4 weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from officials and agencies via oral or written communication

Full Job Description

  • Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, employment and treatment programs.
  • Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews and evaluates inmates' progress.
  • Interview Inmates, discuss and record progress made on a periodic basis.
  • Counsel inmates relating to their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
  • Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for Information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the SCDC computer to ascertain information pertaining to inmate's social, criminal, educational and family histories.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimal Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.



SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree.

OR

  • An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
