Job Description
Summary
This job involves reviewing inmate records to decide on their placements, programs, and progress in a correctional facility, while also providing counseling and handling inquiries from officials.
It suits someone with a background in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working in a prison environment.
Expect to manage a group of about 250 inmates and complete required training after starting.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
- Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody changes, transfers, and programs
- Skills in developing and implementing classification systems for inmate caseloads
- Experience conducting periodic reviews and assessing inmate progress
- Capability to counsel inmates on adjustment and related issues
- Proficiency in responding to inquiries from officials and agencies, orally or in writing
- Successful completion of four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
Full Job Description
- Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility status for institutional assignment, custody changes, interstate compact, designated facilities, transfers, visitation, employment and treatment programs.
- Develops, coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 252 inmates.
- Conducts periodic reviews and evaluates the progress of inmates.
- Counsels with Inmates on general institutional adjustment or related problems.
- Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for Information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
- Operates the CRT to ascertain information pertaining to inmate's social, criminal, educational and family histories.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimal Requirements:
A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree.
OR
An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
OR
A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
