Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, assigning them to programs and jobs, conducting regular interviews and progress checks, and providing counseling on their adjustment to prison life.

It suits someone with a background in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and good at handling sensitive information.

Expect to work with a team managing about 250 inmates at a correctional facility.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody changes, jobs, and treatment programs
  • Skills in interviewing inmates, recording progress, and providing counseling on institutional adjustment
  • Experience coordinating and implementing classification systems for inmate caseloads
  • Proficiency in operating CRT systems to access inmate history (social, criminal, educational, family)
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from officials and agencies via oral or written communication
  • Successful completion of four-week SCDC Basic Training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, job assignment and treatment programs.
  • Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews of inmates' progress.
  • Interviews inmates, discusses and records progress on a periodic basis.
  • Counsels' inmates as to their general adjustment to the institution and related problems.
  • Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the CRT to ascertain the information pertaining to the inmate's social, criminal, educational, and family history.
Must successfully complete four (4) week SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.



SCDC Minimum Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree.

OR

  • An associate degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any two (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
