Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a prison to review inmates' records, assign them to programs or jobs, and provide counseling to help them adjust during their sentence.

You'll manage about 250 inmates, conduct regular check-ins, and handle paperwork and computer systems for their information.

It's a good fit for someone organized and empathetic with experience in administration or corrections who wants to support rehabilitation in a government setting.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody, employment, and programs
  • Skills in interviewing inmates, counseling on adjustment issues, and conducting periodic progress reviews
  • Proficiency in operating SCDC computer systems for accessing social, criminal, educational, and family histories
  • Experience coordinating classification systems and responding to inquiries from officials and agencies
  • Successful completion of four weeks of SCDC basic training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Evaluate inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, employment and treatment programs.
  • Coordinate and implement an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and evaluate inmate's progress.
  • Interview inmates, discuss and record progress made on a periodic basis.
  • Counsel inmates relating to their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
  • Respond orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries or information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operate the SCDC computer to ascertain information pertaining to inmates' social, criminal, educational and family histories.
  • May serve as the institutional records manager.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC basic training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree.

OR

  • An associates degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
