Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of caseworkers who handle the classification and management of inmates in a correctional facility, including supervising daily tasks, ensuring fair workloads, and participating in decisions about inmate placement and housing.

It also requires training staff, interpreting court orders for sentencing, and acting as the main contact for classification issues.

A good fit would be someone with experience in corrections or inmate management who is organized, fair-minded, and comfortable working in a prison environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of inmate classification experience, OR Associate’s degree and two years of inmate classification experience, OR High school diploma and four years of inmate classification experience
  • Ability to supervise and train classification caseworkers
  • Experience monitoring caseloads and ensuring equitable distribution
  • Knowledge of inmate classification processes and compliance with agency policies
  • Skills in interpreting court orders and computing sentence time
  • Must successfully complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Under limited supervision of the Central Classification Branch Chief and the Associate Warden for Operations.
  • Supervise the organization training and daily work activities of classification caseworkers.
  • Monitor caseloads to ensure equitable distribution of work and caseloads.
  • Monitor reviews and serves as a member of the ICC to evaluate and classify inmates.
  • Serves as the central point of contact on classification matters.
  • Supervise and monitor all classification actions to ensure compliance with policy.
  • Plan and schedule class activities.
  • Manage a reduced caseload of inmates.
  • Interpret court order to determine sentence time and computation.
  • Monitor housing to ensure compliance with agency policy.
  • Conduct on-going training for institutional classification staff.
  • Perform other classification related duties as required.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and related experience.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of inmate classification experience;

OR

  • An associates degree and two (2) years of inmate classification experience;

OR

  • A high school diploma and four (4) years of inmate classification experience.
