Job Description

Summary

This job involves overseeing the maintenance and repair of a large correctional facility, including planning daily tasks, handling emergencies, and managing a team of workers and inmates to keep buildings, grounds, and equipment in good condition.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in building upkeep and leadership skills who can handle both routine schedules and unexpected issues in a secure environment.

The role requires completing basic training and focuses on preventive care to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma and 5 years of professional experience in facilities maintenance, including at least 1 year in a supervisory role
  • Thorough knowledge of trades such as plumbing, electrical, general construction, kitchen equipment, and heavy equipment operation
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and supervise maintenance and repair programs for buildings, utilities, grounds, and equipment
  • Experience developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs, including checklists and scheduling
  • Skills in determining requirements, setting priorities, obtaining materials, and assigning work to teams
  • Ability to establish on-call procedures for emergency responses and ensure prompt performance
  • Capability to select, train, orient, and evaluate new employees and inmate trade workers

Full Job Description

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, implement and supervise the daily and emergency maintenance and repair programs for a 1500 bed institution.

  • Develops maintenance plans and procedures for over 18 buildings, utility services, grounds, installed equipment, etc.

  • Determine requirements, set priorities, obtain required materials and equipment, and assign work.

  • Establishes on-call procedures to respond to emergency maintenance and repair calls and ensures the work is promptly and properly performed.

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance program for the institution.

  • Determine all items requiring periodic preventive maintenance and develop pm check list for each item.

  • Schedule and follow up to ensure that preventive maintenance is completed as required.

  • Develop plans and cost estimate, determine schedule, and obtain required materials, supplies, and equipment.

  • Select, orient and train new employees and inmate trade workers and evaluate their performance.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

An associate's degree and professional experience directly related to the area of employment.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and 5 years’ professional experience related to the area of employment, one of which must be in a supervisory capacity.

  • Thorough knowledge of trades is being supervised.

Qualifications

Prefer professional experience in the principles and techniques of facilities maintenance to include plumbing, general construction, electrical, kitchen equipment, and operation of heavy equipment.
