This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The incumbent will be responsible for reviewing all formal National Security Council (NSC)-related correspondence; monitors all NSC actions; processes taskings to all J-5 Deputy Directorates; provides advice on processing NSC-related actions; maintains working liaison with the various agencies participating in the NSC system; monitors actions and meetings; and maintains official corporate records.
You may qualify at the GS-12, if you fulfill the following qualifications: A.
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service: Analyze and synthesize information, write reports and brief senior leaders in the Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, Defense Agencies and Field Activities and the Military Services.
Interprets policies and procedures governing Active and Reserve Component, joint (Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Marine Corps) General/Flag Officer (G/FO) management to help formulate legislation that may directly impact the general and flag officer population.
Applies knowledge of program operation practices, tools, and methods to develop and manage programs that will further the 1- and 2-star nomination process.
Utilizes strong written and verbal communication techniques to use tact and diplomacy and negotiation skills when working with management.
Work effectively with office teammates and with counterparts in the Department of Defense (DoD) and outside agencies to prioritize tasks, deconflict competing demands, and complete tasks.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

As a ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT SPECIALIST (NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL) at the GS-0301-12 some of your typical work assignments may include: Serving as the central lead for managing all incoming joint and interagency correspondence from entities including the White House and the Department of Defense.
This involves analyzing, prioritizing, and either assigning tasks to the appropriate internal teams or negotiating their reassignment with other directorates.
Establishing and refining the directorate's internal policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for task management, records management, and document control.
This role involves leading working groups to define and improve processes and ensuring all procedures comply with Joint Staff guidance.
Acting as the primary point of contact for the ETMS2 tasking system, managing all user accounts, providing supplemental training, and developing specific instructional policies for all personnel within the J5 directorate to ensure efficient and effective operations.
This role is central to coordinating all aspects of National Security Council (NSC) and Homeland Security Council (HSC) meetings for the Joint Staff.
It involves notifying senior leadership, distributing agendas, monitoring the creation of briefing books to prepare the Chairman and Vice Chairman, and clearing personnel to attend meetings at the White House and other secure locations.
Acting as the primary liaison for the continuous flow of information between the Joint Staff and other key agencies.
This includes maintaining situational awareness by updating organizational charts, distributing weekly schedules, and ensuring the proper distribution and archival of official meeting summaries and Presidential Directives.
Providing comprehensive administrative and managerial support to all J-5 personnel, from handling daily office operations and document preparation to assuming full supervisory duties in the Branch Chief's absence; this role also includes critical specialized functions such as serving as the Assistant Travel Coordinator and the alternate liaison to the State Department for language services.
Acting as a key security official by serving as the alternate control officer for all classified materials, responsible for the accounting, distribution, and inventory of Top Secret and NATO documents, while also managing the security and accountability of all IT and physical property within the directorate.
