Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing and processing various permit applications for transportation projects, such as utilities, driveways, and traffic control, while assisting with site inspections and responding to public inquiries.

It supports the state's transportation department by ensuring compliance with regulations and coordinating with engineers, developers, and citizens.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with hands-on experience in technical fieldwork, comfortable working outdoors in challenging conditions, and skilled in communication and organization.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma and two years of progressively responsible engineering technician experience, or approved equivalence
  • Technician Certification per SCDOT policy may substitute for six months of related experience
  • Ability to conduct full reviews of permits including drainage, driveways, landscaping, signs, and traffic control
  • Frequent physical demands: bending, kneeling, stooping, lifting up to 50 lbs, walking on rough terrain, and working near traffic
  • Attendance at meetings with staff, engineers, developers, citizens, and contractors
  • Assisting with citizen concerns, FOIA requests, and training permit inspectors
  • Occasional work outside normal hours, including weekends, and exposure to noise or environmental hazards

Full Job Description

Assists county permit offices with the review and distribution of permit applications that are required to be reviewed at the district and headquarters level. These include utilities, landscaping, drainage, municipality, temporary driveway, resurfacing, signs, traffic calming, traffic control, and permit applications located within current and future SCDOT construction projects. Conducts full reviews of bus shelter, drainage, commercial driveways, small subdivisions, temporary driveways, landscaping, municipality, SC Infrastructure Investment Program, schools, signs, traffic calming, traffic control, WSE sensors, and other permit assignments as assigned by the district permit engineer. Attends meetings with internal staff, engineers, developers, citizens, and contractors as assigned by the District Permit Engineer. Organizes and stores preliminary plans and meeting notes for future reference as requested by the district permit engineer. Trains and assists district permit inspectors on how to perform site reviews pertaining to DPE assigned permit applications. Assists and responds to citizen's concerns to include Customer Call Center requests as well as Freedom of Information Act requests. Support permit applicants with their general questions or concerns. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
