Full Job Description
Performs roadway safety inspections of shoulders, barriers, vegetation, drainage, traffic signs and pavement markings (primarily for reflectorization) on all system roads in Dorchester County. Inspections are performed daily, monthly, annually, nightly, and in accordance with policies, procedures and SCDOT specifications. Performs inspections of all work completed by maintenance contractors, including mowing cycles, litter pickup, tree removal, street sweeping, and other maintenance contracts as needed on all system roads in Dorchester County. Assists in the inspections of repairs to all guardrail, cable barriers and crash attenuators in accordance with policies, procedures and SCDOT specifications. Assists in the completion of annual walkthrough inspection of interstate guardrails. Performs general office duties, including correspondence related to roadway safety inspections and maintenance contract processes. Maintains complete and accurate daily diaries. Uses the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) or equivalent software, along with related programs and electronic equipment, to carry out daily responsibilities. Assists with right-of-way data, utility locates and the researching of plans. Learns the processes for weekly progress and final inspections of encroachment permits. Assists customers with information as directed by supervisor. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may require availability for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
