Full Job Description

Conduct field inspection for moderate level contracts such as roadway mowing, vegetation or tree removal, street sweeping, etc. where field measurements for payment are required. Keep diaries and field notes. Performs duties related to contract facility maintenance (custodian, grounds maintenance, lift stations, etc.) at SDOT buildings or rest areas. Performs duties related to contract landscaping maintenance. Performs feature/routine inspections on all roadways in Colleton County to include low/high shoulders, drainage, dead trees, guard rails, catch basins, curb and gutter, sidewalks, pavement markings, night inspection, signs, potholes, ditches and other roadway defects as outlined in the business plan and HMMS. Performs monthly and yearly inspection of dry chemical fire extinguishers, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, eye wash showers, emergency showers, shop yard, building, environmental, etc. inspections to ensure compliance with appropriate state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations and all pressure vessel safety valves. Investigates illegal encroachment onto the right-of-way and follow department policy in getting them removed. Encroachments include signs, mailboxes and abandoned vehicles, etc. Research and verify present and dedicated right of way using Right of Way Department records, existing plans, and recorded plats and deeds. Perform documentation into HMMS/EPPS as required. Assists with emergency response during inclement weather and other related emergencies during and after hours, assist with administrative duties/office support. Processes and acts upon encroachment permit work: processes road inventories. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.

A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
