The Department of Transportation, District 8-0 is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Transportation Construction Inspector.

This position involves a range of technical responsibilities focused on inspecting materials and workmanship associated with highway construction projects.

Requirements

In this position, you will be responsible for inspecting all aspects of transportation construction activities. Your duties will include assisting in verifying grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also oversee the proper placement of various materials, including cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage components, ensuring compliance with project specifications.

Additionally, you will conduct compaction testing using visual non-movement methods on sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates. Engaging with department personnel, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public, will be essential to facilitate the effective management of projects. You will maintain a master diary, perform mathematical calculations, estimate item quantities and project costs, and assist in addressing any field issues that arise. Your role will also involve compiling photographic documentation, preparing or reviewing sketches, and summarizing inspection findings. As part of the inspection team, you will document and verify the work completed by contractors, contributing to the overall project oversight. You will generate necessary reports for project records, interpret results to monitor progress and schedules, and track material quantities and testing through both manual and computerized methods.

Furthermore, you will create sketches, note any changes to field plans, and maintain comprehensive inspection progress and quality control reports related to the work being performed. It is crucial to ensure that all projects adhere to existing regulations, policies, and procedures while being executed efficiently and cost-effectively.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • You will report to project field office locations within one of the following PennDOT Engineer District 8-0 counties: Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, York, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, or Perry County.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
