Job Description

Summary

This job involves designing and analyzing foundations, bridges, and soil structures for transportation projects, preparing reports, reviewing designs from consultants, and managing contracts with engineering firms.

It also includes representing the department at meetings and conferences, as well as interpreting test data from construction sites.

A good fit would be an experienced civil engineer with a background in geotechnical work who enjoys fieldwork, travel, and collaborating on infrastructure projects.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management
  • Three (3) years of engineering or construction management work experience, or approved equivalence
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license
  • Ability to perform complex geotechnical design and analysis for bridges, retaining structures, and slopes
  • Experience reviewing consultant and in-house projects
  • Skills in managing contracts, interpreting foundation load test data, and attending project meetings
  • Physical ability to handle fieldwork, including walking rough terrain, occasional travel, and working near traffic

Full Job Description

Prepares preliminary and final geotechnical reports and geotechnical specifications. Performs complex design and analysis of conventional and non-conventional bridges, retaining structures, reinforced embankments and slopes. Performs reviews of consultant and in-house prepared projects. Represents SCDOT at conferences and workshops as well as be a part of committees related to geotechnical engineering. Manages geotechnical "on-call" contracts with limited oversight. Coordinates with the Contracts Office to provide scope of services, fee estimates, consultant evaluations, and other contract documentation. Reviews and interprets Pile Driving Analyzer test data and other foundation load test data. Performs final analyses of deep foundations using load test data. Attends project scoping, design field review, and public meetings as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned.
















Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and three (3) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
