This is position is located in Bureau of IT Infrastructure & Operations, Richland County.

Are you the One? We are looking for a Systems Engineer II who, under minimal supervision, is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of enterprise infrastructure and systems technologies. The Systems Engineer II ensures platforms are secure, scalable, and aligned with organizational and security requirements. Responsibilities include managing system configurations, automation, patching, deployment solutions, monitoring, and performance optimization across virtual and physical environments. The role serves as a technical resource for both project-based and operational efforts, collaborating with cross-functional teams, vendors, and end users. The incumbent will be a subject matter expert in their domain, which may include System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) / Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), and is expected to mentor junior staff and contribute to strategic infrastructure initiatives.

Leads the configuration, deployment, and daily operations of the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) / MECM and Microsoft Intune environments.

Manages operating system deployment (OSD), application deployments, patching cycles, configuration baselines, endpoint compliance, and asset intelligence.

Supports hybrid co-management with Intune, enabling modern endpoint provisioning, monitoring, and security.

Collaborate with security and identity teams to apply conditional access policies and Zero Trust frameworks.

Review vulnerability reports to identify threats to Windows endpoints. Prioritize and plan patch deployment based on severity and business impact. Coordinate remediation with stakeholders.

Ensure application of patches aligns with scan findings. Maintain audit-ready documentation of patch status and exceptions. Collaborate with the security team for feedback and continual improvement.

  • Serves as the escalation point for SCCM / MECM and server-related incidents, including patching failures, deployment issues, and virtualization faults.
  • Utilize VROPs and other tools to proactively monitor performance, storage capacity and server health.
  • Maintains technical documentation including SCCM / MECM process guides, patch schedules, run books, and system diagrams.
  • Engages in continuous learning and professional development. Shares knowledge through cross-training and contributes to improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by management and lead staff.

    Requirements

    A bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and experience in computer system development and modification.

    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered with prior State Human Resources approval.

    Additional Requirements:
    • Sitting or standing for long periods of time.
    • Overtime and/or weekend work with Deputy approval.
    • Lifting requirements: 25 lbs.
    • Valid driver's license.

    Qualifications

    • Extensive knowledge of information technology system analysis, design, testing, and maintenance techniques.
    • Extensive knowledge of computer or network hardware, software, operating systems, programming languages, or other information technology tools/resources.
    • Ability to solve complex problems and apply critical thinking skills to needs or problems, both individual and as part of a team.
    • Ability to prepare status reports and complex technical reports in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to work effectively with users, vendors, staff members, and other IT units.
    • Ability to follow technical directions.
    • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
