Full Job Description

The City of Saint Paul Public Works Department is hiring a Survey Crew Leader to lead a field survey crew in support of public infrastructure and land development projects.

This position performs and oversees a variety of land surveying tasks, including boundary surveys, cadastral surveying, benchmarks work, topographic surveys, construction staking, as-built surveys, and AutoCAD drafting.

The Crew Leader ensures that field operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards, working closely with engineers, planners, and GIS technicians.

Here's what you can expect to do:
  • Lead a field crew in performing surveying activities related to public works projects (roads, utilities, stormwater systems, property boundaries, cadastral surveying, etc.).
  • Operate and maintain GPS, total stations, data collectors, and other survey equipment.
  • Collect, process, and verify accurate field data for engineering and design teams.
  • Convert rough sketches, survey data, or engineering designs into detailed digital plans.
  • Understanding of corridors and the ability to interpret construction and design plans for layout and staking purposes.
  • Communicate with supervisors, project managers, and public to clarify survey needs and resolve issues.
  • Train and mentor survey technicians and instrument operators.
  • Maintain detailed and organized logs, field notes, and sketches.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed on-site and in traffic areas.
  • Assist in preparing survey-related documentation, reports, and legal descriptions.

Requirements

Must meet one of the following:
  • Four years of progressively responsible field survey experience to include at least one year of experience with scheduling, orienting, training, or leading team members.
  • An Associate’s degree in Drafting, Civil Engineering Technology, Land Surveying or a related field, and two years of progressively responsible field survey experience to include at least one year of experience with scheduling, orienting, training, or leading team members.
Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out of state driver's license.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position.

Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist.

When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e.

hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list.

If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.

Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status.

A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire.

You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Pre-Employment Screening: This position requires a driver’s license check as a condition of employment. Candidates will be required to submit proof of education to Human Resources upon conditional job offer, if qualifying based on education.
