This job involves surveying rivers and streams in Washington to count and document salmon and steelhead fish during their spawning season, collecting biological samples, and entering data to help manage fish populations.
It's a short-term, full-time role from March to June 2026, based in Mill Creek, ideal for someone who loves outdoor fieldwork, has basic biology knowledge, and is comfortable hiking in rough terrain and handling boats.
A good fit would be an enthusiastic recent graduate or nature lover eager to gain hands-on experience in fisheries conservation.

This is an opportunity to gain valuable field experience in fisheries management within Snohomish County.
In this dynamic role, you will provide critical support by gathering data that will be used to assess fish stock status and estimate salmon and steelhead escapement.
WHAT TO EXPECT -
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
Spawning ground/stream surveyor.
Biological sampling.
Data management.
Access and equipment maintenance.
Working Conditions:
Work setting: Primarily field work in rivers and streams walking up to 8 miles in rugged terrain in and out of the water, floating in rafts or boats in variable flow conditions and weather.
Ability to conduct physically demanding spawning ground surveys walking/hiking up to 8 miles in rough and variable terrain and stream flow and weather conditions wearing personal floatation devices (pfd).
This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week.
The standard work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, however, the schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed.
Schedules may vary based on business needs, time of year, and/or weather conditions.
Travel requirements: Regular travel is expected. Adhesion to agency vehicle policies traveling from duty station to survey index areas is required.
Customer Interactions: Communication with private landowners and the general public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute year-for-year for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute year-for-year for experience.
License: Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
One (1) year or more of experience in:
Surveying spawning grounds.Salmon identification skills.
Safe watercraft handling skills.
Operating vessels safely in inclement weather in a variety of stream flow conditions.
Knowledge of watersheds of Snohomish County.
