Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team that handles legal cases related to fines, penalties, and seized property for U.S.

Customs and Border Protection, including reviewing evidence, making decisions on relief requests, and guiding staff on regulations.

It's a supervisory role in a federal law enforcement setting in Baltimore, Maryland.

A good fit would be someone with strong paralegal experience in government or legal enforcement, who enjoys detailed analysis and team leadership.

Full Job Description

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S.

Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Baltimore Field Office, Fines, Penalties, and Forfeitures (FPF) Staff, located in Baltimore, MD.

Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Developing and evaluating all evidence, facts, and circumstances relating to a particular case.

Making determinations, decisions, and recommendations within the requirements of the laws and regulations.

Receiving, examining, and evaluating petitions filed by individuals, attorneys, corporations or other legal entities seeking relief from seizures, penalties, fines, and liquidated damages.

Preparing and issuing decisions on cases and preparing recommendations for granting or denying additional relief. Providing technical and administrative advice and guidance to subordinates.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a federal law enforcement agency that requires all applicants to undergo a thorough background investigation prior to employment in order to promote the agency's core values of vigilance, service to country, and integrity.

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise to provide legal support of those executing the law enforcement duties.

In this Supervisory Paralegal Specialist position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals serving in the capacity as a principal advisor to, and staff member of the Division Director who oversees CBP's penalties, seizures and liquidated damages programs.

Typical work assignments include: Reviewing and processing all cases within their area of authority through to final adjudication and solution.

Performing and directing administrative and operational work of the Fines, Penalties, and Forfeitures (FPF) and Seized Property programs.

Developing and implementing procedures, which promote efficiency and program effectiveness. Performing inspections, audits, and oversight.

Serving as a mentor to other officers by providing complex technical, legal, and administrative direction to ensure compliance with national policy, laws and regulations.
