Job Description

Summary

This job is for the head of NASA's environmental team at Ames Research Center, where you'll lead efforts to manage the center's environmental programs, ensure compliance with laws, and handle sustainability for space research activities.

You'll supervise staff, create policies, and work with government agencies, partners, and leaders to protect the environment while supporting NASA's missions.

It's ideal for an experienced environmental leader with strong management skills and a background in aerospace or government environmental work.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-14 level in leading environmental compliance, planning, conservation, restoration, or sustainability projects
  • Experience providing technical oversight in areas like Environmental Services, Cultural Resources Management, Energy/Water Management, NEPA, Natural Resources Management, Remediation, or Sustainability
  • Proven ability to lead development, planning, and implementation of environmental policies and strategies
  • Skills in coordinating with regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and agency leadership to ensure compliance and mission support
  • Supervisory experience including staff assignment, evaluation, personnel actions, discipline, and employee development
  • Ability to manage budgeting, resource allocation, and program coordination for environmental protection
  • Strong representation and collaboration skills in meetings with NASA, federal/state agencies, industry, and community stakeholders

Full Job Description

As the Chief of the Environmental Services Division at NASA Ames Research Center you will oversee the execution of the Center's environmental program, including local policy creation, planning, implementation, monitoring, and review.

You will also oversee the allocation of resources for planning, development, coordination, and operational activities that evaluate and address the environmental impacts of aerospace activities.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Leading teams or complex projects supporting environmental compliance, planning, conservation, restoration, or sustainability initiatives; Providing technical direction or oversight for environmental program areas such as Environmental Services, Cultural Resources Management, Energy/Water Management, Environmental Compliance, NEPA, Natural Resources Management, Remediation, or Sustainability; Leading the development, planning, and implementation of environmental policies or strategies and coordinating with regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and agency leadership to ensure compliance and support mission objectives.

  • Provide staff supervision, coordination, and oversight for the execution of program areas such as Energy/Water Management, Environmental Compliance, NEPA, Remediation, and Sustainability within the Environmental Services Division.
  • Represent the Environmental Services Division in meetings and collaborations with NASA Headquarters, other Centers, Federal and State agencies, industry partners, and community stakeholders on environmental programs and regulatory matters.
  • Manage, plan, direct, and coordinate division budgeting and environmental protection programs that support environmental services and operations across all segments of Ames Research Center.
  • Advise on, manage, supervise, and perform administrative or program work related to environmental compliance and protection programs at Ames Research Center.
  • Provide functional leadership, policy, planning, and coordination for organizational sustainability, environmental compliance, environmental planning, environmental conservation, and environmental justice issues to enable Agency mission success.
  • Perform a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees.
