Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of technicians and engineers to test and oversee the mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems on nuclear-powered submarines during construction, repair, or upgrades at a naval shipyard.

You'll act as an expert advisor, review contractor work, and ensure everything meets safety and performance standards.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 or NJ-03 in testing and evaluating propulsion, hull, mechanical, or electrical systems for submarines or ships
  • Expertise in submarine systems testing and operation, particularly non-nuclear propulsion and mechanical systems
  • Supervisory experience, including guiding engineers and technicians, making work decisions, and leading selection panels
  • Ability to review and approve contractor test plans, procedures, schedules, and certifications
  • Skills in conducting ship checks, analyzing technical correspondence, and resolving equipment issues
  • Strong liaison and communication abilities for meetings with contractors, vendors, and naval personnel
  • Relevant experience in naval or shipbuilding environments, including volunteer or paid work building technical competencies

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the Test Division of the Engineering Department of SUPSHIP.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NJ-03 pay band (GS-11 equivalent) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing technical guidance on the testing and evaluation of propulsion, hull, mechanical, or technical systems for submarine or ship systems.

  • You will serve as an expert technical consultant in the field of submarine systems testing and operation.
  • You will be responsible for testing of all non-nuclear naval propulsion, hull, mechanical, and electrical systems aboard nuclear-powered submarines undergoing construction, overhaul, modernization and/or repair.
  • You will provide surveillance, review, and acceptance of contractor test engineering products including test program implementation plans, procedures, instructions, short- and long-term schedules and certifications.
  • You will review and analyze incoming correspondence and preparations of outgoing technical correspondence.
  • You will perform ship checks and similar functions and facilitate resolution of technical programs in cognizant systems/equipment.
  • You will maintain liaison through meetings and conferences with contractor supervisors, test engineers, vendors and other engineering personnel from within the organization and from other Naval commands.
  • You will supervise the work activities of Engineers and Engineering Technicians by general policy guidance and acceptance of work.
  • You will make decisions on work problems presented by Branch personnel.
  • You will lead/chair panels for selections for non-supervisory positions.
