As a Supervisory Asylum Officer (Section Chief), you will supervise individuals who review determinations on complex applications for asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 04/06/2026.

Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service.

The Time-in-Grade requirement must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 04/06/2026.

GS-14: You qualify at the GS-14 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must have experience performing the following duties: Providing oversight of work performed by subordinates and assigned staff; Developing immigration program standards, procedures, or organizational guidelines; Coordinating the long-range planning of immigration benefits programs; Assessing the productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of immigration program operations.

  • Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, with Refugee, Asylum, and International Operations, Asylum Division and is assigned based on the need of the agency.
  • Supervise individuals who review determinations on applications for asylum, credible and reasonable fear screenings, and related applications.
  • Ensure that office resources are allocated and managed efficiently to support the timely review and processing of asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.
  • Provide technical and administrative direction to Asylum Division staff whose work involves the adjudication of asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.
  • Conduct reviews to ensure that applications for asylum benefits and other services are granted properly, with an appropriate level of quality in interviewing and case write-ups, and out-processing is achieved and maintained.
  • Formulate short- and long-term strategies for the office consistent with Asylum Division goals to help the organization accomplish its mission and objectives, and prepare plans and timetables for the implementation of these strategies.
  • Prepare plans, reports, and analyses of the immigration benefits operation, to include reviewing individual and program performance, and taking action to ensure compliance with established requirements, goals, standards, and objectives.
