Job Description

Summary

This role involves helping college students with financial aid by counseling them, reviewing applications, awarding grants and loans, and running workshops for high schoolers.

It also includes keeping records accurate and staying current on funding rules to support the university's financial aid office.

A good fit would be someone organized and communicative with a background in education or finance who enjoys working with students and teams.

Full Job Description

Francis Marion University invites applications for a Student Services Counselor in the Financial Assistance Office whose duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Counsel students regarding Financial Assistance.
  • Evaluates applications for student financial aid, processes documentation as it is received and performs manual analyses of need as necessary.
  • Conducts high school workshops on financial assistance.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and institutional guidelines concerning financial assistance.
  • Ensures accuracy of all student records.
  • Awards federal, state, and private grants, loans, and work programs within specified guidelines, ensuring updates are made to reflect issuance of aid.
  • Supports the daily operation of the Financial Assistance office.

Requirements

State Requirement: A bachelor's degree.


FMU Requirements: strong written and oral communication skills; ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot solutions; ability to work both independently and as part of a team; ability to interact confidently with the public and with colleagues from various offices.

Qualifications

FMU Preferences: previous work experience in higher education; previous work experience in a Financial Assistance office; an understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); knowledge of Federal and State Financial Aid policies; at least three years’ experience in data processing; experience with MS Office Suite; experience with Ellucian (Colleague) or similar student information system.

Pay Grade: GEN06

Salary: $37,200

Normal Working Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday). Summer hours will vary.
