Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting residential students at the Utah Schools for the Deaf, helping them with daily activities, monitoring behavior, and ensuring their safety in a dorm-like setting during evenings and nights.

It requires hands-on assistance with tasks like eating, dressing, and mobility, while communicating with parents and staff.

A good fit would be someone patient and energetic who enjoys working with children facing hearing or vision challenges and has basic skills in sign language and behavior support.

  • Willingness to work evening/night shifts (5 nights/week, August-June) and substitute as needed
  • Physical capability to transport, transfer, and carry students, including those in wheelchairs

Full Job Description

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider an employment opportunity with our school. We are looking for a dynamic and meticulous candidate to fill the position of Student Life Technicianin Ogden.  This position is working with the residential students in the Deaf School. in Ogden. *Work Schedule in coordination with the school year August - June: 5 nights a week. Sunday 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. AND Monday through Thursday 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and available to substitute for other Student Life Technicians.*

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • helps to monitor and consequate behavior as prescribed by written interventions.
  • records corresponding data.
  • helps students increase independence in eating, dressing, toileting, communication and leisure skills.
  • reports student progress to staff and parents as needed.
  • communicates with parents and teachers.
  • follows prescribed procedures in emergency situations.
  • reports medical problems to medical staff and assists in rendering emergency and maintenance health care under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • supervises students in the cottages and on activities.
  • transports students (some may be in wheelchairs) to and from meals and activities.
  • transfers and carries students with limited mobility as needed.
  • provides basic custodial care of facilities, does laundry and dishes.
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
The Ideal Candidate will:
  • American Sign Language (ASL) skills required.
  • Have experience dealing with students with behavior challenges, taking data and tracking behavior.
  • Must be willing to change classroom assignments as needed.
  • MANDT training or Crisis Prevention Training is required, but training will be provided with this agency prior to working with the student.
  • Some knowledge of applied behavior analysis and interventions with a focus on positive reinforcement is required.
  • Must comply with strict level of confidentiality.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively.

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants with previous experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or blind/visually impaired children.

      • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

    • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

  • Paid Time Off:

    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

    • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.

    • We have 12 paid holidays.

Qualifications

In order to drive a state vehicle, incumbent must have and maintain a valid Utah driver license and clean driving record. Employee hired for this recruitment will be subject to the Driver Eligibility standards found at the following link: http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r027/r027-007.htm#T3.

  • This position has strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring heavy lifting of students with limited mobility and/or their special needs equipment.

    Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.

  • Successful completion of criminal background check contingent upon employment.
